Intricate to the John Howard Society of Niagara’s Justice division is the Direct Accountability Program. It is an alternative to prosecution for eligible adult individuals (18+) charged with minor criminal infractions. Program participants must willingly accept responsibility for their actions and have demonstrated an interest in making amends through an approved sanction agreement.
The program features the use of community sanctions as a means of promoting a sense of accountability for the offender. Examples of previously approved sanctions include: restitution, a formal apology, volunteer work, a charitable donation, program participation, attendance at a presentation, a peace bond and/or forfeiture of seized property, etc.
