The Prevention division of the John Howard Society of Niagara aspires to contribute to a healthy, positive outlook and limitless hope for a brighter future among those at-risk.

Currently, our Prevention division includes:

Changes

For many years, Changes has been supporting the teaching of essential social and problem-solving skills to young people with learning disabilities or those identified with behavioral problems. Participants have typically been segregated in special classes within Niagara’s elementary schools. The John Howard Society of Niagara proudly supplies funding for some of their specialized events, including school trips, special lunches and breakfasts, etc. Back on Track is an extension of the Changes model that allows for the integration of other students into the program.

Anger Management Program

Anger is a normal, usually healthy, human emotion. But when it gets out of control and turns destructive, it can lead to problems – problems at work, in your personal relationships, and in the overall quality of your life. And it can make you feel as though you’re at the mercy of something overwhelmingly powerful and unpredictable. If you feel that this has happened, or could happen, in your life, this program is for you. Click here to read more…

Strengthening Families for the Future and For Schools

A prevention program for families with children between the ages of 7 and 11 who may be at risk for substance misuse, depression, violence, delinquency and school failure. Strengthening Families is effective because it involves the whole family. The goals of the program are to: reduce children’s or adolescents’ intention to use alcohol and/or other drugs, reduce other behaviour problems, increase children’s resilience and life skills, increase positive and effective parenting, and to increase family communication.

Please see our Programs section for more detailed program descriptions.
