Attendance Centre Counsellor – Relief Staff
The John Howard Society of Niagara is searching for relief employees who will be scheduled for work on a casual or intermittent basis. This position is responsible for delivering the Attendance Centre program, across the Niagara Region, which services high risk youth in the Criminal Justice system between the ages of 12 and 17, who have been referred by the court and/or their probation officer. This position is responsible for providing direct services, including client supervision, liaising with the community, families, probation and the courts, and the development, implementation and maintenance of a cognitive behavioural program curriculum. The Attendance Centre Counsellor works with Probation Officers to monitor and supervise the terms of a court order. This position reports directly to the Supervisor – Attendance Centre. You will have:
- successful completion of post secondary studies, either a degree or a diploma, or equivalencies
- 3 – 5 years related experience working with high risk youth with a demonstrated ability to effectively engage and motivate them
- experience with cognitive based theory and how it relates to youth program development
- demonstrated knowledge with regard to the Criminal Justice system and relevant legislation
- demonstrated experience with individual and group counselling and facilitation skills
- demonstrated ability to implement cognitive based programs on an individual and group basis
- ability to work a range of shifts including afternoons and evenings
- a valid drivers license and have access to his / her own vehicle and a satisfactory driving record and automobile insurance of at least one million dollars
- satisfactory criminal reference check in accordance with the JHSoN policy
Salary Range: $39,800 to $45,300

Volunteer Court Intake Worker – Justice Services Volunteer Program
The purpose of this position is to act as a representative of the John Howard Society of Niagara, the Ministry of Public Safety and Security and the community. Volunteer Court Intake workers participate in providing intake services for new probation cases for both adults and youth for the provincial court system at either 59 Church Street, St. Catharines, or 102 East Main Street, Welland. Volunteers will be required to provide a commitment of one year to the program, at one or more days / week from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Completion of the Ministry’s training process is required. You will have:
- Some post secondary education; recommended areas of study would be Correctional Worker, Social Service Worker or Human Services
- Previous volunteer experience would be asset
- Excellent communication skills, including both verbal and written skills, with a strong attention to detail
- A valid driver’s license and have access to his / her own vehicle and a satisfactory driving record and automobile insurance of at least one million dollars
- Satisfactory criminal reference check in accordance with the JHSoN policy
Position responsibilities:
- Interviewing new probation cases immediately after their court appearance, and completing all basic personal intake information
- Explaining the conditions of the probation order to adults and youth
- Advising the client of their reporting instructions
- Compiling accurate information, preparing notes and reports and forwarding documents to the Probation Offices
- Developing and maintaining working relationships with probation officers and court officials

Volunteer Mediator – Project REWIND
Project REWIND is a school based prevention and diversion program that is funded by the Ministry of Children & Youth Services. Volunteer mediators will work in various high schools across the Niagara Region, providing mediation conferences to resolve incidents that have been referred to the program. Volunteers will be required to provide a minimum of 10 hours of time for each mediation conference referred to the program. A copy of the full job description is available upon request.
You will have:
- Some post secondary education; recommended areas of study would be Child and Youth Worker, Social Service Worker or Human Services
- Some knowledge of the REAL justice restorative conference model and peer mediation programs
- An ability to use software and computer applications
- Excellent communication skills, including both verbal and written skills
- A valid driver’s license and have access to his / her own vehicle and a satisfactory driving record and automobile insurance of at least one million dollars
- Satisfactory criminal reference check in accordance with the JHSoN policy
Position responsibilities:
- Scheduling and conducting interviews with the various parties involved in incidents which have been referred to the REWIND program
- Facilitating mediation conferences, using the restorative justice model
- Compiling accurate information and preparing notes / reports which will be used to conduct mediation conferences
- Ensuring that contracts are drafted, signed and monitored
- Mandatory attendance at a two day training seminar on restorative justice conferences will be required. The training is provided by the John Howard Society of Niagara.
